Artisans in Germany, Holland, and Belgium first devised the practice of veneering floors with marquetry of woods in non-figurative patterns. This floor's provenance is unknown, but it must have once decorated a small, elegant room in a German courtly residence. At some later point, workers cut it into four sections to remove it from its original location.
