From the Getty Museum record

A studio portrait of a man in a suit with hand color added to his tie and cheeks to make them pink. This photograph was captured by studio portrait photographer James R. Applegate born 1835. Applegate owned Vine street Galleries a photographic studio in Philadelphia on Vine Street and 8th. This photograph was taken at that studio, the gilding on the exterior of the carte suggests that it was taken sometime after 1861. In early 1863 James was drafted to the civil war to fight for the Union, he lists himself as a “photographist”, married, and born in New York on his 1863 registration to the Ohio 1st regiment. James R. Applegate died on April 9, 1863 near Philadelphia. Despite his passing his photographic studio remained open in the same location and continued to bear his name in the directory until 1904.
