A tiny human figure stands at the base of a massive Cornish cliff, dwarfed by dark rock that towers over a narrow cave entrance letting in just a sliver of pale light. William Spreat captured this sea cave, known in Cornish as Zawn Pug - the Song of the Sea - as an albumen silver stereograph in the 1860s. Mounted side by side on card, these two nearly identical images were designed to snap into three dimensions through a stereoscope, bringing Victorian parlour visitors face to face with a landscape they might never otherwise see.
