This tankard is executed in “Britannia Standard, ” a higher level of silver purity imposed on silversmiths to avoid a devaluation of British coinage. Purer silver is also softer and easier to engrave. Decades after the tankard was made, the front was used as a setting for an elaborate coat of arms in the Rococo style of the mid-18th century.
