Benjamin Franklin went to France in 1776 to secure money and military aid for the American Revolutionary War. There he became a beloved celebrity at the French court, inspiring countless depictions, which circulated in print, fashion, and even candy boxes. This terra-cotta medallion was commissioned by Franklin’s French host Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont and shows Franklin wearing the simple fur cap he made famous. Europe
