From 1846 to 1848, Lewis traveled up and down the Mississippi River making sketches for a huge panorama which he completed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1849. Those sketches remained a creative wellspring for him, and in later years he made additional paintings based on them. He painted this view of St. Anthony Falls (in Minneapolis) while he was living in Düsseldorf, Germany. Europe
