At just four and a half inches tall, Albrecht Dürer packed an entire scene of grief into this 1512 engraving from his Small Passion series. Six mourners crowd a shallow stone tomb, lowering Christ's body while a bearded man strains to support the weight from below and the crown of thorns lies discarded on the ground. The cross-hatched lines Dürer achieves at this tiny scale are almost impossibly fine. These prints made the Passion story affordable and accessible to ordinary people, which was the whole point.
