In a woodcut barely five inches tall, Albrecht Dürer stages one of the most charged moments in the Passion story. The High Priest Caiaphas tears open his robes at the right, while armored soldiers press Christ forward, halberds rising behind them in a dense tangle of bold lines and shadow. This scene comes from Dürer's celebrated Small Passion series, created in sixteenth century Germany. It matters because Dürer packed extraordinary psychological force into a print small enough to hold in your hand.
