Behind them, a full panoramic landscape stretches into the distance, complete with grazing sheep, a shepherd, and a town reflected in still water. This 1504 woodcut shows Dürer using fine parallel lines and cross-hatching to achieve a depth that barely seems possible in the woodcut medium, and that technical ambition is exactly why it matters.
