The bookcase was commonly used in the scholar's study to store books and scrolls and to display collectibles. Few examples combining huang-hua-li and ebony remain, and this work uses a less expensive hardwood, tie-li-mu, in the shelving, which when set with objects had less visibility than the huang-hua-li frame and ebony shelf rails.
