Saint Simon stands here holding a large serrated saw, the instrument of his martyrdom, as casually as a craftsman heading to a job site. Albrecht Dürer captured this aged apostle in a 1523 engraving barely eleven centimeters tall, using fine hatched lines to render the heavy folds of his robes and the texture of a long beard. At that tiny scale, the detail is remarkable, and it shows why Dürer remains one of the supreme masters of the engraver's burin.
