At just twenty-five years old, Albrecht Dürer packed an entire massacre into a single sheet of paper. This 1497 woodcut shows dozens of figures being killed across a rocky, forested landscape, some pierced by arrows, others thrown from cliffs, with clergy and soldiers watching from the foreground. What makes it remarkable is that Dürer coaxed all of this density from carved wood, a medium rarely asked to do this much.
