In this 1504 woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, a winged angel descends toward Mary's father, kneeling in a forest that opens onto a sweeping landscape complete with a shepherd, his flock, and bare winter trees. Dürer's dense, engraving-like lines build deep shadow in the foliage and rich texture in the figures' robes. As part of his Life of the Virgin series, this print became one of the most widely distributed sacred narratives in early sixteenth-century Europe.
