A twenty-six-year-old Albrecht Dürer carved this scene of cosmic warfare and permanently changed what European printmaking could be. In this 1498 woodcut, the Archangel Michael drives a lance downward through a writhing tangle of dragons and monsters, while a peaceful landscape of towns and water stretches calmly below the chaos. The Apocalypse series was the first major publication an artist produced, printed, and sold entirely himself, and the dense interlocking lines here gave woodcut a richness once thought possible only in painting.
