Based on Ovid's Metamorphoses, this engraving depicts Apollo's musical victory over Pan. The seated King Timolus, wearing a wreath of oak leaves, judges the contest, while next to him stands King Midas, who having preferred the tunes of Pan's pipes to Apollo's refined play on strings, is punished for his ignorance by being given the ears of an ass.
