This unassuming red morocco volume, bound in deep crimson goatskin and plain along the spine, holds something extraordinary inside. Written by the Amsterdam rabbi Menasseh ben Israel in the seventeenth century, it contains four etchings by Rembrandt, among the only book illustrations he ever produced. The images depict scenes including Jacob's ladder, David and Goliath, and the vision of Daniel. Rembrandt's collaboration with this prominent Jewish scholar reflects a remarkable cultural exchange at the heart of the Dutch Golden Age, preserved here at the Petit Palais in Paris.
