In this plate from Goya's Los Caprichos, a pompously costumed figure towers over patients who literally crawl on all fours at his feet, one slumped and prostrate to the right. Goya, working in etching, aquatint, and drypoint in the late eighteenth century, calls this figure the Conde Palatino, a charlatan nobleman playing doctor.
