When the Archbishop of Paris stepped onto a barricade on June 27, 1848, pleading for peace, he was shot dead - and this small brass medal was struck to remember him. Cast by an anonymous Parisian medallist, it shows a left-facing portrait bust of Monseigneur Denis Affre in his episcopal vestments on one side, and his tomb rendered in low relief on the other. Claimed by both sides of a fractured France, this medal circulated as mourning, politics, and piety pressed into metal.
