This etching of the poet Théophile Gautier began with a photograph by Nadar, making it a collaboration between two of the biggest names in nineteenth-century Parisian culture. Félix Bracquemond translated that photographic source into dense, cross-hatched lines, giving Gautier's heavy coat and bearded face a dark, atmospheric depth that only the etching needle could produce. Printed in Paris by Auguste Delâtre, this small work is both a portrait and a statement, because Gautier was one of the loudest voices calling for the revival of etching as a serious art form in France.
