Satsuma-style porcelain was made in Japan from around 1870. Its colourful decorations and lines in gold, with elegant figures from Japanese antiquity catered to the growing number of foreign tourists. Depicted on the lid is a procession with a sedan coach. A scene on the side presents court ladies, one of whom plays the koto, a Japanese zither.
