This bowl and lid – with a rooster-shaped knob – is covered with dark red monochrome glaze. In China this lustrous dark red colour was called ‘sacrificial red’. This type of pottery was made in Jingdezhen from the 15th century and remained in production throughout the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
