Scaramouche is a stock character in the commedia dell’arte. This form of comic theatre from Italy was highly popular throughout Europe during the 18th century. Commedia dell’arte figurines were produced on a large scale in the Meissen porcelain factory in Saxony. Delft factories adopted this fashion.
