While Dutch Catholics could not openly profess their religion, what they did in private was another matter. For instance, a pious Catholic from Zwolle commissioned this plain beaker with a depiction of the Pope and Emperor Rudolf II for domestic use. It commemorates his trip to Rome and Vienna. In Rome he had kissed the Pope’s feet, and in Vienna he had paid his respects to the Emperor.
