In 1760 the French king Louis XV presented a Sèvres porcelain dinner service with avian decoration to Elector Charles Theodore of Bavaria. Though the service had 24 place settings, Charles Theodore decided to order many additional pieces. He did not do this at Sèvres, but rather at the local Frankenthal porcelain factory. The painted decoration on this tureen closely resembles that of its Sèvres model, but its shape is simpler.
