During his sojourn in Italy, the Flemish sculptor Dieussart mastered a modern portrait style based on Classical models and executed in Italian marble. Dieussart’s likenesses of Pieter Spiering and Johanna Doré reflect the form of Classical busts, but are subtly enlivened by having the sitters turn their heads towards each other.
