Lutma made this magnificent ensemble for Joan van Hellemont, a prominent citizen of Amsterdam. The kwab ornament is almost smothered by marine gods and other beings, yet still determines both the model and the structure of the objects. The scenes symbolize the riches of the sea and of agriculture. The shapes of the ewer and basin express the same abundance.
