The lid of this snuffbox features a portrait of Elisabeth Jacoba de Court. Her husband, Jacob Hendrik de Ridder, either purchased or received the box as a gift in the year of their marriage. In his will, he bequeathed to her ‘a gold snuffbox with her portrait,’ a special memento of their union.
