A bird was the target at annual shooting contests. Whoever managed to shoot the bird on a high pole became the new ‘king’ of the militia company, and on ceremonial occasions he was entitled to carry a staff crowned with a gilded silver bird. This particular bird presumably came from a civic guard company in Hulst.
