In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many portraits of Toussaint L’Ouverture and other Black revolutionaries were made in France. This Dutch print is after a French example from 1802. Unlike Toussaint, Tula was not to be remembered. The colonial government tried to completely erase Tula’s existence. It is only in the last 50 years that Tula has been commemorated as a symbol against slavery.
