The sitter Peter August was a servant in the Dresden court of August the Strong II, Elector of Saxony. The elector was an enthusiastic collector of East Asian porcelain, acquiring more than 24,000 pieces. His interest in all things evocative of Asia, extended not only to ceramics but also to members of his court, such as this Kalmyk servant from Central Asia.
