De Mesquita was a graphic artist and enormously significant for Dutch printmaking, especially in the field of woodcuts. Samuel, his wife Betsie and son Jaap were quietly taken from their home in 1944. His appalled former pupil Escher, who found the studio ransacked, said: ‘Removed in the middle of the night. He [is] seriously ill. Taken away in the middle of the night.’
