Printing with more than three colour blocks became possible as of 1765. The starting point was still the line block. The colour blocks were carved so that they could be printed exactly within the contour lines of the line block. Harunobu is credited with creating these multi-colour prints, known as nishiki-e. In this print he used muted, greyish tones, creating the appearance of twilight.
