This is the most classic rendering of St Jerome that Rembrandt ever etched. He sits in his study, pensively reading a book. Without the lion in the right foreground, barely visible in early impressions, it would be unclear who is represented. It must have been a challenge for Rembrandt to model the dark chamber with only the dim light falling through the window.
