In Rembrandt’s time, pancake women were a familiar subject in art. Here, however, the scene’s liveliness gives the impression that the artist actually saw this woman on the street. She prepares her treats, oblivious to the bustle in her stand. Deftly portrayed as well is the toddler holding his pancake in the foreground, who with irritation turns away from the pushy little dog.
