Landscape with a Cottage and a Large Tree

The style, subject, oblong format and paper agree so closely with the print displayed above that Rembrandt surely must have meant them as a pair. This type of cottage is called a ‘langhuisboerderij’ (‘longhouse-farmstead’) and has a roof covered with thatch and sod. Rembrandt depicts the dwelling in a dilapidated condition, but still inhabited; two children stand in the doorway.
