This man has traditionally been identified as the Sephardic rabbi, printer and writer Menasseh ben Israel, although this is not certain. He lived around the corner from Rembrandt. His facial features are remarkably informally portrayed. They were probably friends, for in 1655 Rembrandt made four illustrations for a book Menasseh wrote (on display in Gallery 3).
