This etching with aquatint, created in Spain between 1815 and 1820, shows a grotesque giant figure grappling with a shorter one at center, while a crowd of grimacing, distorted faces presses in from the left and watching heads peer over a ledge on the right. Part of his series called the Disparates, or Follies, it matters because it refuses clear meaning, offering not satire but something closer to a nightmare Goya could not quite name.
