Adam and Eve, the first human couple created by God, were allowed to eat all of the fruit in Paradise, except from the Tree of Knowledge. Here Rembrandt depicts Adam trying to prevent Eve from taking a bite of the forbidden fruit. She is spurred on by the devil hiding in the tree. That his shadow falls on her is hardly a coincidence.
