In this etching (with the same subject as the adjacent drawing) Rembrandt has turned the bodies of Jesus and the angel. Here Jesus is shown frontally. His closed eyes indicate his inner turmoil and utter loneliness: should he revolt against his fate – his death on the cross – or accept it? His disciples have fallen asleep, and the soldiers in the distance threaten to draw closer.
