The woman depicted here wears a Spanish verdugado, a conical skirt stiffened with horizontal bands. The spectacular effect of light and dark perfectly shows off the raised edges and folds of the fabric. Vermeyen introduced extensive cross-hatching in the right half of the etching, thereby casting the scene almost entirely in shadow. The outlines of a sleeping dog can just be made out in the darkness.
