This pastel and monotype, made between 1877 and 1881, shows three women pressed together on a cushioned bench, their bare shoulders and low necklines rendered in loose, gestural strokes of grey-black ink over warm rust and ochre tones. The monotype process, where Degas drew directly onto a metal plate, gives the scene a caught, unposed feeling that no other technique could produce. These brothel images remained in his private collection, making them among the most candid social documents of nineteenth-century Paris.
