The sacrifice of Christ foretold in the adjacent print has come to pass. Wracked by sorrow Mary bends over the body of her dead son, supported by John and three women. The figures display both the influence of the Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden and the sense of drama typical of this engraver from Zwolle.
