Michelangelo designed and carved the tombs of Giuliano and Lorenzo de’ Medici in San Lorenzo in Florence. These masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture were a source of inspiration for scores of artists. The Duke of Nemours is represented in the middle of this tomb. Among the nine modelli by Van der Schardt are studies of the duke’s left hand and right leg.
