This unique print pulled from an unfinished copper plate, engraved by the young Albrecht Dürer, affords great insight into his working methods and the technical aspect of printmaking. The figure of the monarch is delineated by the initial striking and flowing lines cut with a burin (a pointed graver). He then worked out a part of the fabric further with hatching and short strokes.
