The upright format and diagonal sweep of this etching were derived from Titian. Rembrandt underscored the diagonal layout of the depiction by alternating passages of light and shade. He left the foreground deliberately unfinished to produce the effect of bright sunlight. The shaded area behind Jerome is a dense web of parallel and criss-crossed drypoint lines.
