Rembrandt’s copper plates endured after his death and were often used, causing them to gradually wear down and the resulting prints to lose some of their refinement. In an effort to restore their original quality, they were ‘reworked’: the darkest areas were reinforced with fine lines so that they came out a deep black again when printed. Looking closely at this early 20th-century impression, it becomes apparent that the lines appear bolder compared to the earlier impression.
