Jan Uytenbogaert was the receiver-general of taxes for Amsterdam and surroundings. In 1639 he helped Rembrandt collect overdue payment for a painting commission. In gratitude, the artist portrayed him in the guise of a 16th-century moneychanger carefully weighing and recording his earnings. Uytenbogaert loved that kind of old art and will most certainly have appreciated this witty allusion to his profession.
