When Christ heard that his friend Lazarus had died, he hurried to his grave. There, he called out loudly to the deceased man, who came out of the tomb wrapped in burial cloths. In this monumental etching, Christ towers authoritatively over everyone. Rembrandt also focuses attention on the bystanders. They respond to the miracle taking place before them with grand gestures.
