Christ squats among his apostles and washes Peter’s feet above a water basin. Peter objected to Christ humbling himself in this way. He could not understand that Christ, with this servile task, expressed his superior humanity. That Peter is still surprised is evident from his pose; he leans forward in his chair and grips its arms.
