A messenger in a top hat stands before artist Christiaan Andriessen, his posture heavy with reluctant news. In this pencil and watercolor drawing from 1805 to 1808, Andriessen sits with his back to us, mahlstick in hand, mid-stroke on a canvas, while a ghostlike nude figure lingers at the far left. A handwritten inscription below records the exact Friday his model Mietje died. This small sketch is both a studio scene and a private document of grief.
